After a busy few weeks at school, I wondered if we could even get people together for a turkey dinner. But with some last minute planning and a bunch of sms' and phone calls it came together and was a great time.
My friend Gaby wanted to host it, another friend donated the turkey and everyone brought something. We had lots of food and everything was amazingly delicious.
It was the first time I really made a turkey. I had prepped a turkey once at the Ferreira's and learned how to make stuffing and gravy. But that was almost 4 years ago. I was super nervous about doing it on my own. Stories of burnt, or dry horrible turkey ruining Thanksgiving ran through my mind.
So I talked to Jacque, (the Ferreira's have some kind of special culinary anointing) and she gave me some good tips and emotional pepping। The end result? Amazing! The turkey was moist and juicy!!! The stuffing was good and I even loved the gravy। I usually don't like gravy, but this gravy was good. And I didn't even really follow a recipe!!! I just kinda added stuff as I went। = o Can you believe it?
But wait there's more! We had about 20 people over and everyone brought stuff! We had veggies and dessert and apple cider! It was awesome! We weren't certain if we'd have enough food, drinks, plates or even room to sit but it worked out.
Without a lot of planning, or much stress (although I did stress a little but not so much that I couldn't stop and watch Princess Bride for a bit) it just all came together.
It made me really appreciate all the Thanksgivings past and I did miss everyone of you back home. But most of all I realized how I never think about the history of Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims were fleeing religious persecution in England and found their way to America.
I realized that was an interesting point as I live in Egypt and Christians and Muslims get along but really there is tension between the two and how thankful I am that I can live here and not in Saudi where I couldn't even state that I'm a Christian.
I read the story about the Pilgrim's with new eyes and thought it was very interesting. We comment about how degrading and un-PC it is today to celebrate Thanksgiving and how we colonized the Indians and all that bull. But that was not the case... you can't stop change. CHANGE HAPPENS, that's life.
Last night was a great Thanksgiving and I am so thankful for a great community of friends here in Egypt and for a great family of friends back home. Even though you all are so far away (literally the other side of the world) thoughts of each of you are alive and strong in my heart.
Happy Thanksgiving and praise God from whom all blessings flow!!!
