But when I left for Sweden I knew there was no way I would be warm enough, even if I wore everything I owned. Veronika, my old roomate from Hawaii, asked around and got me a pair of boots, a bunch of sweaters and a warm jacket to wear. My lifesaver!!!
I flew in on Christmas eve, which is the main day to celebrate Christmas here. So that night we went to dinner at her collegues house and enjoyed Tanzanian and Swedish food and lots of champagne. It was a small dinner party and the conversation was very nice and I learned Swahili is a pretty simple language that has many arabic words and is widely spoken in Africa. I understood when one woman was telling her grandson to eat. They say kola instead of akol and I was like hey thats sounds like arabic.
Christmas day we went to see the new movie Avatar. Suprisingly I liked it. I usually am pretty critical of movies but it was not bad.
Veronika recently purchased a plot of land near where she grew up so we drove up to the area and visited her grandmother and family and spend the weekend up there. It was full on snow country. They had about of foot of new snow and everything was amazingly beautiful.
I heard Swedish spoken the whole weekend and could pick out words here and there. Because I knew what V was talking about most of the time she didnt need to fill me in on every detail. But everyone was kind enough to make sure I wasn't left out and made sure to speak English with me as well.
I really enjoyed the time with her family. Its so nice to be around family and people you know and love. It wasn't my family but i enjoyed the warmth among them anyway.
While up in snow country I made my first snowman and we made snow angels. I have to admit I was afraid to be in the snow too long and feared freezing to death. Even though that sounds silly, it was still a possibility in my mind. However, I have survived and the experience has weakend the fears.
Today, V has work, so I will wander around Copenhagen and check out the Carlsberg brewery and museum. I sold Carlsburg when I worked at Ryan's back in Honolulu and its a good beer. I'm looking forward to visiting the brewery.
